School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Lecture Series ~ Cecile Bhang, Counseling

Join us for another School of Social Sciences Brown Bag lecture on Monday, September 13th at 12 pm with Cecile Bhang, Assistant Professor of Counseling, who will be discussing her recent research, Resilience and 1.5 Generation Korean American Young/Emerging Adults in the United States.

This exploratory qualitative study uses grounded theory to uncover cultural factors that promote and facilitate resilience in 1.5 generation Korean American emerging, young adults in the U.S. Total of 14 Korean American participants recruited from Los Angeles and surrounding areas completed demographic questionnaire and semi-structured interview ranging from 60 to 90 minutes. The data was then analyzed through the use of grounded theory, which yielded three categories and a model related to cultural factors that promote resilience in 1.5 generation Korean American emerging, young adults. Results indicated several themes in each of the three main categories of Resilience Promoting Factors, Cultural Context, and Understanding of Cultural Context. The proposed model developed from the findings highlighted the intersection between culture and resilience illustrated by 1.5 generation Korean American’s resilience process. The model involved cultural context, meaning making of it and their influence on resilience promoting factors, adding onto ecosystemic, socio-ecological frameworks of resilience (Ungar, 2015).
