School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Lecture Series ~ Debora Paterniti, Sociology

Join us for another School of Social Sciences Brown Bag lecture on Monday, October 4th at 12 pm with Debora Paterniti, Professor of Sociology, who will be discussing her recent research, The Work of Generous Practices.

Generosity is both an identity and a social act, and it reflects an underlying emotional exchange in social relationships. While typically considered prosocial behavior, acts of generosity can be socially paradoxical in that rules for exchange and acceptance may highlight hierarchies and power imbalances. The purpose of this talk is to describe the contexts in which generosity happens, including the perceptions and practices critical to defining generosity in everyday social exchange.  In her Brown Bag talk, Dr. Paterniti will discuss preliminary understandings of generous practice and its hidden paradox; project discussion will also include ways to engage students in collaborative research using team-based interview training.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fall 2021 Brown Bag Series will take place via Zoom. Please join us: https://SonomaState.zoom.us/j/88396474182.

The School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Series is always free, open to faculty, staff, students, and the public, and provides a congenial interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of recent research by School of Social Sciences faculty.
