School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Lecture Series ~ Kyla Walters (Sociology)

Join us for the School of Social Sciences Brown Bag lecture series on Monday, April 11th at 12pm with Kyla Walters (Doughty), Assistant Professor of Sociology.

Title: Mapping the Contours of Tri-racial Aesthetic Labor

Beauty-centered retail industries, like clothing and cosmetics stores, demand the performance of aesthetic labor. This concept refers to how visible employees are chosen and cultivated for their ability to embody a company's desired “look.” In my previous scholarship, I found evidence of a tri-racial aesthetic labor process that promotes white-dominant beauty standards, exoticizes certain physical markers associated with racial difference, and reinforces anti-Black racism. This talk will explore tri-racial aesthetic labor and next directions for my empirical research.

Dr. Walters is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology Department. Her research focuses on racial and gender inequalities in education and work.

The School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Series is always free, open to faculty, staff, students, and the public, and provides a congenial interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of recent research by School of Social Sciences faculty. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021-2022 Brown Bag Series will take place via Zoom.
