The fourth speaker in Conversations with Black and Brown in Blue is Tru Pettigrew. Tru currently serves as the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Lynx of the National Basketball Association. As a Diversity & Inclusion advocate and committed Community Bridge Builder, Tru has established a strong reputation for building bridges across racial, cultural, social, and relational lines. The third speaker in Conversations with Black and Brown in Blue is Marvin G. Richardson, who was appointed as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives on June 4, 2021. He is currently also functioning as the ATF Acting Director under the Vacancies Act. Mr. Richardson is responsible for leading an agency of men and women charged with enforcing laws and regulations related to firearms, explosives, arson, and alcohol and tobacco trafficking. The second speaker in Conversations with Black and Brown in Blue is Eric Roman, Lieutenant with the Dallas Police Department. He served 8 years in the United States Marine Corps (Reserves) and has served as a police officer with Dallas Police Department for 19 years. His previous assignments include Patrol, SWAT, Narcotics, Fugitive & Gangs. He also has served as Unit Commander of – Assaults Unit/Sex Assaults, Missing Persons, and Mobile Field Force Units. For the first time, WGS Professor Don Romesburg shares research from his book-in-progress about the history of K-12 LGBTQ history education in the U.S. He reveals how this struggle began in the 1970s, had a burst of unrealized promise and frustration in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and is finally being realized in the 21st century. He will also discuss the current backlash to the progress that's been made, and the road ahead.
Dr. Alexis Boutin, Anthropology Professor and CRM Coordinator, is presenting a talk called “What’s Real About Race? Biological and Socio-Cultural Perspectives from Anthropology” to SSU faculty, staff, and administrators, in support of the upcoming SSU Common Read, So You Want to Talk About Race.
The law enforcement profession is facing greater public scrutiny than ever before. Across the nation, communities are discussing reform and accountability for police misconduct, and better approaches to implementing meaningful changes to safety and security of our communities. Similar conversations are occurring throughout the California State University other state and regional campuses.
The Human Development program is sponsoring a talk by Dr. Jessica Lopez (UC Irvine) on October 7th at 4pm to discuss: "Language, Race, and Class as Barriers to Parenthood: How Latinx Parents Navigate Child Welfare Court in California."
