Brown Bag Lecture Series - Carlos Torres

Dr. Carlos Torres will present his research, Consensus Now - Searching for Political Common Ground in the U.S. & Identifying the Structures of Division.

Polling data indicate a rise in political division in the US., and public trust in institutions (including the U.S. Government, medical science, and journalism) is at a modern low. A close examination of polling data also suggests, however, that there are many ways in which the U.S. electorate still registers widespread accord, on issues as diverse as the environment and the U.S. democratic process. My research this summer was to identify potential directions for a larger cross-state ethnographic query evaluating U.S. consensus on ten “wicked” problems in the U.S.

Dr. Torres is a Senior Lecturer in the Anthropology Department. His research focuses on public sphere discourse and media anthropology.

The School of Social Sciences Brown Bag Series is always free, open to faculty, staff, students, and the public, and provides a congenial interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of recent research by School of Social Sciences faculty. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022-2023 Brown Bag Series will take place via Zoom.
