Sociologists Dr. Joya Misra (University of Massachusetts) and Dr. Kyla Walters (Sonoma State University) are celebrating this month. Their book, Walking Mannequins: How Race and Gender Inequalities Shape Retail Clothing Work (University of California Press), has hit the shelves.

Drawing primarily on interview data, this study examines how low-wage service workers experience their corporate employers' expectations to embody the store brand. Misra and Walters show that surveillance of workers (and customers) is pervasive. Racial and gender inequalities are often maintained within these workplaces, undermining solidarity between workers.
